Why I want to study at Manchester school of Architecture

It would be a privilege to study a BA (Hons) in Architecture at Manchester school of Architecture because the course is exciting, full of challenges and opportunities for to me learn and express my ideas. The conversion of The Manchester University and The Manchester Metropolitan means I would have access to a wide variety of expertise and resources which I find would be incredibly beneficial. I also believe that your university has a high employment rate after university which I find appealing to say the least, especially in times like these where employment is hard to come by.

Richard Long exhibition

Recently I attended a private viewing of an exhibition by the world renowned artist Richard Long. Richard Long has been creating art for more than 40 years varying from poems to immense shapes created amongst the natural landscape. All of his work in the exhibition was intriguing to view and discuss, each piece telling its own specific story. For me the most memorable piece of art was called ‘circle in Africa’ which was created in 1978. It is a black and white photograph showing a sculpture he created whilst on his travels around Africa. Although an incredibly simple idea, it captivated me knowing that the circle is man-made however the resources it is made from are natural, creating an interesting contrast between the man-made sculpture and the natural landscape.

Below are some of Richard Long’s works which I find particularly inspiring.

Favourite Architect

My favourite architect is Norman Foster as I admire him for his innovative approach to designing high rise skyscrapers.  I especially like his Torre Caja Madrid as I think it’s the future in skyscrapers and how they can be environmentally friendly, aesthetically pleasing and conserve space especially in a time where overpopulation is causing space to be a problem. My favourite aspect of this piece of architecture is the space on the roof which can be used in the future to hold wind turbines. I like this because as well as making the building interesting to look at, it also has the ability to have its own source of renewable energy.

Architecture I would like to visit

One piece of architecture which I would love to see, although slightly generic, is the masterpiece Fallingwater by the great Frank Lloyd Wright. I would like to visit this piece of architecture because of its iconic history and also how it’s designed to blend into the landscape, bridging the gap between the natural environment and the manmade environment. Another aspect which I love the illusion created of being amongst the landscape with the sounds and the sights that come with it. I would also like to visit Fallingwater In order to marvel at the immense piece of architecture and to gain inspiration from one of the great architects of the 20th century.
